When you’re leading, bring lots of sunshine and laughter

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.” ~ Anthony J. D’Angelo

Working in a time-bound, fast-paced assignments during global emergencies, I am often asked what’s the secret of a successfully executed role and deliver.

Clear direction. Flexibility. Discipline at work. Ability to roll up sleeves and do the work with people. Innovate! Then, most importantly, bring lots of laughter and fun as work rolls. Lastly, nothing’s a secret, everyone’s on it.

If you are in the business of serving people, how you do it is felt by who receives it. It starts with your own team, they’re the first ones you influence. You’re together. They have to love and enjoy the work as much as you do.

“Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

But, a big but, leading is also giving feedback when someone needs it. It’s not always appreciation time. Teamwork is honesty when you see they’re not up to the job.

Care enough to say it, not tolerate it! Think stewardship. Opportunities are lost when someone is dragging the team down.

When all is said and done, be decisive to let go kindly. It’s not easy, but that’s what it takes to build a good team where everyone understands their contribution is crucial.

This never really gets old, “People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” — Dale Carnegie
